Over the last 20 years, R&B has gone through many transitional periods. After going through growing pains trying to keep up with the times for most of that period, around 2015 things started to take shape and find direction. After seeing artists like Summer Walker, Brent Faiyaz, Jhene Aiko and many more, it’s apparent to anybody that listens that R&B is in a great place. Hailing from Atlanta by way of New Jersey, rising vocalist Shamba has the chops to be mentioned among those names. Looking to prove her prowess, she checks into our pages for the first time with her wonderful new project, Though it Was Love.

Clocking in at 26-minutes, the 8-track EP is a brisk listen though that doesn’t take away from the quality. Throughout the project, Shamba eagerly reveals her feelings behind the title as she speaks about a love gone wrong that she couldn’t have seen going left. On records like, “Tell Me How You Really Feel,” and “Stuck With Me,” she chooses to do this in a more upbeat manner, allowing her feelings to come second to the vibe of the record. Where the album really finds’ it’s footing is in songs like, “Risk it All,” and “Toxic.” Serving as one of the few slow songs on the project, “Risk it All,” is perfectly titled as Shamba ditches her comfort zone and really showcases both her pen and vast vocal range. In contrast, “Toxic,” featuring Michael Aristotle, is her sticking firmly to her comfort zone and showcasing her strengths on full display.

In all, Thought it Was Love is a great introduction to Shamba for those that were previously unaware. Take a listen to the project below and get familiar yourself.
