Okay. Look. I understand that in 2020, melodies rule over all. I get that. I also get that just rapping intricate bars over soul samples won’t make you a superstar anymore. I GET IT… But it doesn’t mean that I have to like it. You see, there’s nothing better in Hip-History than when a motherfucker can rip through a looped 70s soul sample with the ease of a steak knife going through butter. It resets my soul. So, it’s no surprise that after hearing North Carolina natives Paragon Don & David Lewis rip through the production on their new single, “Had To Do it,” it instantly became one of my favorite tracks of the month.

Produced by Snacman, the aforementioned production really sets the tone for this record. Utilizing a chilling soul sample that I can’t quite put my finger on, Snacman sets the table perfectly for Don and Lewis to eat their food. With each taking turns on the mic — no hook style! — each provides an introspective, well-written verse that finds the listener looking to rewind certain parts for clarity. The chemistry between these three is obvious and I hope we get some more records from the trio in the not-to-distant future.

Check out the record below and get familiar with North Carolina’s booming underground scene.
