Maryland based singer Gallant has made a splash with his new album “Sweet Insomnia”. Gallant, best known for his pop crossover hit “Weight In Gold”, is back with a heater, this time leaning more on his deeper soul-music roots to create a sound as fresh as it is nostalgic. He sings, belts, and runs through this project like the seasoned R&B veteran that he is to become.

From the first sounds on “410(Intro)”, Gallant leads his audience into a sweet slow pocket in which to display his ever-growing vocal strength. He’s further into his blues bag than the last time we heard from him, which is a good thing, as it makes for a soundscape that feels more true to the core of the artists’ tastes. Songs like “Paper Tullips” & “Forever 21” land in a groove that’s bound to evoke movement without even trying. On the album’s title track, which features Atlanta superstar 6lack, our groove reaches its height, with Western-inspired bass lines & Gallant’s signature falsetto cry. As the album progresses, so does the musical pallet, as we see the Maryland singer switch between his sleek R&B melodies & the crossover pop sound that made him popular. Other notable tracks include “Sleep On It”, which feels like a Maxwell record in the best way possible, and the Sabrina Claudio-assisted “Compromise”. In the latter song, the two singers opt for a smooth dancehall influenced beat as a canvas to tell tales of truth & concession. By the end of the album we’re left with a beautiful piece filled with Gallant’s soulfulness and sheer talent. The DMV artist has created R&B project we’ve been waiting for all year.

Whether it’s sensual R&B records or groovy pop sounds, Gallant is proving to be a master of his desired sound. Listen to “Sweet Insomnia” here, and keep an eye out for more from the Maryland singer.
