L.A.’s Lil Dujour Returns With Must Watch Visual + Song
Last time we covered the Los Angeles genre-bender Lil Dujour, the world was fresh in pandemic-mode and he was on the cusp of releasing his debut project Dude, Where’s My Plug? Well its May, quarantine’s almost over (thank God!) and Dude Where’s My Plug? is here, as well as a comedic new visual for the song “Cruel Summer” — the intro track from the tape. In this hilarious musical short, Dujour showcases why he deserves to be regarded as one of the premier newcomers in the music industry and entertainment, period.
In the opening skit, a disoriented Lil Dujour wakes up in the morning with a non-alcoholic hangover following an obviously wild night. Dujour and fellow producer & friend Zerow start their day trying to put together the pieces of the previous one, opening up their cabinets to a sea of empty pill bottles with no explanation; just a reiteration of the never ending question: where da hell is the plug? When the song starts we shift into official music video mode, but that doesn’t stop the playfulness of the whole thing, as Dujuor’s friends continue to make multiple appearances for comic relief. This is something we would love to see in his future videos, as it bridges the gap between fans of the music and fans of the personality behind it. The whole picture in itself is an eye-catcher, from Dujour dripping a slime green Adidas tracksuit to him speeding through Hollywood in an open-roof Jeep. He might not be that well known yet, but he looks (and sounds) like a superstar, which is more than half the battle.
The song itself is a piece about two lovers realizing they have different paths, and the recoil that entails after such an epiphany. Dujour sings and raps about being left alone to discover himself, and how that discovery has formed his past into something he could never return to. The heartache, the trauma, and the “Cruel Summer” have made him into a man and a budding worldwide phenom; he’s determined to do the best in music even if he can’t do the best in his relationships, a sentiment any young artist can understand. Lil Dujour’s rock-like vocals over heavy trap music-inspired hi-hats and basses have become a huge part of his signature sound. It’s refreshing, its bold, and most importantly it’s original. If he can keep this up, he’ll have his own brand of hip-hop, equipped with it’s own “Lil Dujour type beat” category on Youtube and all.
There’s endless potential for a record like “Cruel Summer”. The video is just as good as the song, and Lil Dujour knows it. Quoted saying it was his “favorite video (I’ve) done thus far”, he’s getting better and better at connecting directly with his audience.
